Rail Keeps Britain Moving

Our railway brings Britain to life connecting communities, delivering goods and helping to reduce congestion. Fundamental to the country’s prosperity, nearly 5 million passengers use our rail network every day,  over 90% of all trains arrive on time and Britain’s railway is ranked the seventh most reliable in the world.

With the fastest growing network in Europe, Britain is running out of space for the trains it needs. Forecasts suggest that there will be a billion extra journeys by 2030 and our network also needs more space for freight trains, which already haul £30 billion of goods annually, a saving of 76% in carbon dioxide emissions over road alternatives. Rail is a growing industry, offering interesting, challenging and rewarding careers.

Our railway carries twice as many a passenger as it did just twenty years ago and by harnessing and investing in digital technology Britain’s family of railway professionals is building timetables, controlling the network and running trains that boost reliability, even as train frequency and volumes increases.

Britain’s digital railway is already happening: London Underground has already increased trains on the Victoria Line from 28 to 34 trains an hour, digital technology investment on Thameslink will allow 24 trains per hour to run in each direction at peak times between Blackfriars and St Pancras International.
